What should you know about stage 1a melanoma?

Stage 1a is assigned using the examination of the removed lesion and its pathology details, including tumour thickness and features such as ulceration. The stage describes the melanoma found at assessment; it does not predict what a changing mole means before diagnosis. A skin lesion can look ordinary, so any concern should be assessed rather than judged from a photograph alone.

Treatment commonly begins with complete Surgical Excision, with the margin planned from the pathology and body site. Your team will explain wound care and whether further skin-cancer surgery is needed. Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy is not routine for every stage 1a case, but may be discussed when specific pathology features make it relevant. Arrange regular skin examinations, check your own skin in good light, and use sun protection that suits your daily routine.

Contact your clinician if the biopsy wound becomes increasingly red, hot, swollen, painful, or produces discharge, or if you develop fever. During follow-up, report a new or changing mole, a firm lump near the scar, persistent swollen glands, unexplained ongoing fatigue, or symptoms that concern you. Urgent help is appropriate for severe bleeding, breathing difficulty, or sudden neurological symptoms.

Ask for the tumour thickness, ulceration status, margin result, and the recommended skin-check schedule. Ask whether you need Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy, what the scar care plan is, and whether Follow-Up After Cancer Treatment should include a specialist visit. Immunotherapy is not automatically part of care for every early melanoma.
