What should you know about SSRIs and hyperthyroidism?
Updated

Short answer
SSRIs do not establish a diagnosis of hyperthyroidism, but medication effects and thyroid overactivity can overlap through symptoms such as sweating, anxiety, diarrhoea and palpitations.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What it means
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are prescribed for several mental health conditions. Early treatment can sometimes coincide with nausea, bowel changes, restlessness, sleep disruption or increased sweating. Hyperthyroidism can produce a similar cluster because excess thyroid hormone speeds up heart rate, digestion and heat production. Timing offers a clue but cannot distinguish the causes reliably. A clinician may review the medicine, examine you and order thyroid blood tests.
What to do next
Do not stop an SSRI suddenly without a prescriber's advice. Record when symptoms began, any dose change, missed doses, other medicines or supplements, and whether symptoms occur at rest. Arrange a review if symptoms are persistent, intense or unlike your usual response. Your clinician can decide whether thyroid testing, a dose adjustment or another explanation should be considered. Take the medicine as directed while waiting for advice unless a professional tells you otherwise.
When to seek care
Seek emergency help for chest pain, fainting, severe breathlessness, confusion, a very fast or irregular heartbeat, or thoughts of harming yourself. Obtain prompt medical advice for severe diarrhoea, inability to sleep for several nights, rapidly worsening agitation or symptoms of dehydration. These concerns can reflect a serious reaction, thyroid illness or another problem requiring examination.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the timing fits an SSRI effect, whether thyroid blood tests are appropriate, and which symptoms need urgent attention. Discuss all medicines and supplements, how to manage missed doses, and whether a safe dose change or alternative treatment is needed.

Questions people ask
Can an SSRI cause symptoms that resemble hyperthyroidism?
Some SSRI effects, such as sweating, bowel changes, restlessness or palpitations, can resemble thyroid symptoms, but testing is needed to separate the causes.
Should you stop an SSRI if you feel your heart racing?
Seek prompt medical advice and urgent help for severe symptoms; do not stop the medicine abruptly without professional guidance.
