Which Cells Do Squamous Cell Carcinomas Affect?

Short answer
Squamous cell carcinomas begin in abnormal squamous cells, the flat cells forming the outer layer of skin and some linings.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Cell type
- Squamous cells are flat protective surface cells.
- Main skin location
- They form much of the epidermis.
- Confirmation
- A pathology examination can identify the tumour type.
What these cells do
Squamous cells are thin, flattened cells that create a protective surface. In skin, they sit in the epidermis and are continually replaced as older cells shed. A carcinoma develops when abnormal cells grow in an uncontrolled pattern and may extend into deeper layers. Similar cells are present in parts of the mouth, throat, cervix, anus, and other linings, so the name describes a cell type rather than one single body location. A visible patch or lump cannot identify the cell type by itself.
How it is checked
A clinician examines the area and may remove a small sample for a pathologist to study. The report can distinguish squamous cell carcinoma from irritation, infection, a precancerous change, or another skin tumour. If cancer is confirmed, the team considers the lesion’s depth, borders, position, and nearby nodes when planning care. [Surgical Excision](/treatments/surgical-dermatology/excisional-surgery/) and [Skin Cancer Surgery](/treatments/surgical-dermatology/skin-cancer-surgery/) are examples of treatment topics to discuss.
When to seek care
Arrange a clinical review for a sore that does not heal, a rough patch that keeps returning, a firm lump, or a spot that bleeds or changes. Seek faster advice when the area becomes painful, rapidly enlarges, develops persistent crusting, or affects eating, vision, movement, or another normal function. These features need assessment; they do not diagnose cancer by themselves.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which cell type the biopsy shows, whether the sample includes enough tissue, how deep the lesion is, and whether the edges are clear after removal. Ask what treatment suits the site and what changes should prompt a follow-up visit.

Questions people ask
Are squamous cells found only in skin?
No. They also line several moist surfaces in the body.
Can a clinician identify this cancer from a photograph?
A photograph may guide triage, but diagnosis generally requires examination and sometimes a tissue sample.
