What to know about your spouse's snoring

Short answer
Spouse snoring is often caused by narrowed or relaxed upper-airway tissues, but loud regular snoring with pauses, gasping or daytime sleepiness should be assessed for obstructive sleep apnoea.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What snoring can indicate
Snoring happens when airflow makes tissues in the nose or throat vibrate during sleep. Nasal congestion from Allergic Rhinitis or Chronic Sinusitis can make this worse. Alcohol near bedtime, sleeping on the back, smoking and some medicines may also contribute. Obesity can narrow the upper airway, although body size alone does not establish a diagnosis.
A partner may notice breathing pauses, choking sounds, restless sleep or repeated awakenings before the sleeper does. These features can occur with Obstructive Sleep Apnoea, which may leave someone unrefreshed, irritable or sleepy during the day.
Helpful steps at home
Ask your spouse whether the snoring is new, nightly or changing, and describe any pauses or gasps they do not remember. Side sleeping, treating nasal congestion as advised, avoiding alcohol close to bedtime and keeping a regular sleep routine may help. Do not use another person's prescription or rely on untested mouth devices. If weight is a relevant factor, discuss a structured Weight Management Programme rather than pursuing a rapid unsupervised plan.
When to seek care
Arrange a GP review for persistent disruptive snoring, witnessed breathing pauses, morning headaches, dry mouth, poor concentration or daytime sleepiness. Seek urgent help if breathing difficulty continues while awake, there is chest pain, blue or grey colouring, confusion or collapse. Until assessed, avoid driving if sleepiness makes staying alert difficult.
Questions for your doctor
Could nasal blockage or sinus disease be contributing? Do the pauses and gasps suggest sleep apnoea? Would a sleep assessment help? Which treatments are suitable, and could any current medicine worsen drowsiness?

Questions people ask
Should I wake my spouse every time they snore?
Usually, gently changing position is enough for an occasional episode, but repeated pauses or gasping should be recorded and discussed with a clinician.
Does snoring prove someone has sleep apnoea?
No. Snoring has several causes; breathing pauses, choking and daytime symptoms make assessment more important.
