Spot Bleeding After Sex: What It Can Mean

Friction or a small surface injury may cause a little blood, particularly when sex was uncomfortable or the tissue was dry. Changes around the cervix can also bleed with contact. An infection such as Chlamydia may cause bleeding along with discharge, pelvic discomfort, or pain when passing urine. In and after menopause, thinner, drier vaginal tissue associated with Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause can be sensitive and bleed. Less commonly, cervical or vaginal cancer can present with bleeding after sex; the symptom does not establish that diagnosis.

A clinician may ask when the bleeding started, whether it follows every episode, where you are in your menstrual cycle, and whether you have pain, discharge, or bleeding at other times. Examination and screening history help determine whether the blood came from the vagina, cervix, or nearby tissue.

Record the colour, amount, timing, and whether it stopped quickly. Pause penetrative sex if it causes pain or bleeding, and avoid inserting products until the area feels settled. Book a GP or gynaecology appointment when the bleeding repeats, follows menopause, or has no clear explanation. Mention contraception, pregnancy possibility, recent procedures, medicines, and your last cervical screening. Testing for infection may be appropriate when there is a new partner, discharge, or urinary discomfort.

Seek urgent medical help for heavy or increasing bleeding, faintness, severe pelvic or abdominal pain, fever, or bleeding during a possible pregnancy. Arrange prompt review for bleeding after menopause, repeated bleeding after sex, or bleeding with foul-smelling discharge. These signs need assessment because the amount of bleeding and accompanying symptoms matter more than the fact that the symptom is common or uncommon.
