What should you know about spitzoid melanoma?

Spitzoid describes the appearance of melanoma cells that resemble those seen in a Spitz naevus, a type of mole. These lesions can be pink, red, brown, or dark and may be raised or changing. Their appearance alone cannot reliably establish whether a lesion is benign or malignant.

A dermatologist may use dermoscopy and remove the lesion for laboratory examination. The pathology report may assess features such as depth, ulceration, and whether the edges are clear. A second pathology opinion can be useful when the findings are difficult to classify.

Arrange prompt review of a changing, bleeding, crusted, rapidly growing, or unusual mole. If melanoma is diagnosed, treatment commonly begins with surgical excision of the lesion and a discussion about whether further skin cancer surgery is needed.
