What should you know about spindle cell melanoma?

Short answer
Spindle cell melanoma is a melanoma pattern confirmed by pathology, with treatment guided by its depth and spread.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the pathology term means
Spindle cell describes the shape of the melanoma cells, not a separate harmless condition. These cells may form a raised, firm, flesh-coloured, red, or pigmented lesion, and the surface may not resemble a classic dark mole. A lesion can also occur on sites that are hard to inspect.
The diagnosis is based on tissue examination, often with special laboratory markers to separate melanoma from other spindle cell tumours. The melanoma overview gives broader context. The report may describe thickness, ulceration, margins, and other features that help determine the next step.
How care is planned
Arrange review with a dermatologist and, when melanoma is confirmed, an oncology team. The primary lesion is commonly assessed for complete surgical removal with an appropriate margin. Sentinel lymph node biopsy may be offered when the pathology and depth make lymph-node assessment useful.
Further scans are selected when examination or pathology suggests more extensive disease. Treatment can include skin cancer surgery, tumour removal surgery, or immunotherapy depending on stage and overall health. Keep the pathology report and ask which findings are confirmed versus still being investigated.
When to seek care
Seek prompt dermatology review for a fast-growing or changing nodule, a sore that bleeds, or a lesion with new colour variation. After diagnosis, report new lumps, persistent headaches, vision changes, weakness, or unexplained worsening pain to the treating team.
Sudden weakness, confusion, seizure, or severe new headache needs emergency assessment. Such symptoms have many possible causes, but urgent evaluation is needed if spread to the brain is a concern.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what confirms the diagnosis, how thick and deep the lesion is, whether margins are clear, whether lymph-node assessment or scans are advised, and which treatment options fit the stage. Ask how the scar and follow-up will be managed.

Questions people ask
Is spindle cell melanoma the same as melanoma?
It is a microscopic pattern of melanoma, so it is managed within the melanoma pathway while its individual features are assessed.
Can the appearance diagnose it?
No. A spindle-shaped lesion can resemble other growths, and tissue pathology is needed for a reliable diagnosis.
