What should you know about spider veins on face?

Facial telangiectasia can occur on the nose, cheeks, chin, or around the mouth. Sun exposure, repeated flushing, heat, irritation, and some hormonal changes can make vessels more visible. Rosacea commonly presents with facial flushing and thread veins, but visible vessels alone cannot confirm rosacea.

A doctor may ask when the marks appeared, whether they fade with pressure, and whether there is burning, itching, scaling, or easy bleeding. This helps separate ordinary superficial vessels from inflammation or another skin lesion. Facial spider veins are not the same as varicose veins, which usually involve larger veins in the legs.

Protect the face from sunlight, use mild fragrance-free products, and avoid picking, aggressive exfoliation, and home cautery. Keep a record of flushing triggers and photograph the area periodically in similar lighting. If redness or bumps accompany the vessels, assessment for rosacea may help guide care.

A dermatologist may discuss IPL photofacial or pulsed dye laser treatment for selected vessels. Sclerotherapy is used for particular veins and is not automatically appropriate for the face. Ask about test areas, discomfort, expected redness, pigment risk, and the time needed for the skin to settle.

Seek a clinical assessment for a facial vessel that enlarges quickly, becomes painful, ulcerates, crusts, or bleeds repeatedly. Prompt help is needed for sudden swelling of the face, severe pain, spreading warmth, or trouble breathing.
