What should you know about spaso technique shoulder reduction?

Short answer

Spaso technique shoulder reduction is a clinician-performed manoeuvre that uses gentle traction and rotation to guide a dislocated shoulder back into position.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the technique means

A healthcare professional usually positions the person lying on their back, supports the injured arm, and gradually lifts it while applying controlled traction. The arm may then be rotated outward as the muscles relax. The exact movement depends on the injury and examination findings.

A suspected dislocation needs assessment because a fracture, nerve injury, or blood-vessel problem can accompany it. Imaging may be needed before or after the shoulder is reduced. Do not try to reproduce this manoeuvre yourself or let an untrained person pull the arm.

What to do now

Keep the arm still in the most comfortable position and support it with a sling or folded cloth while arranging urgent medical care. Remove rings and watches if swelling is developing. A clinician can check circulation, sensation, and movement before and after reduction, then advise on immobilisation and rehabilitation.

After the shoulder is back in place, follow the prescribed activity limits and exercises. Physiotherapy can help restore controlled movement and strength; see [Physiotherapy](/treatments/physiotherapy-and-rehabilitation/physiotherapy/) for related rehabilitation information.

When to seek urgent care

Go to an emergency department promptly for a visibly deformed shoulder, severe pain after an injury, or an arm that cannot be used. Treat numbness, tingling, unusual weakness, a pale or blue hand, or a hand that feels cold as urgent warning signs because nerves or circulation may be affected.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the shoulder needs imaging, which reduction method is appropriate, how long support should be worn, and when gentle movement can begin. Ask what symptoms would suggest recurrent instability or an injury needing review.

Questions people ask

Can I use the Spaso technique at home?

No. A suspected dislocation should be assessed and reduced by a trained professional, particularly because fractures and nerve or circulation injuries can be present.

What happens after reduction?

The shoulder is rechecked, often with imaging, and the clinician gives guidance about support, pain relief, activity, and rehabilitation.
