A healthcare professional usually positions the person lying on their back, supports the injured arm, and gradually lifts it while applying controlled traction. The arm may then be rotated outward as the muscles relax. The exact movement depends on the injury and examination findings.

A suspected dislocation needs assessment because a fracture, nerve injury, or blood-vessel problem can accompany it. Imaging may be needed before or after the shoulder is reduced. Do not try to reproduce this manoeuvre yourself or let an untrained person pull the arm.

Keep the arm still in the most comfortable position and support it with a sling or folded cloth while arranging urgent medical care. Remove rings and watches if swelling is developing.
