Sore throat after anaphylaxis

Anaphylaxis can swell the throat and affect the airway. Soreness may remain after the reaction or after emergency treatment, but symptoms can also signal that the allergic reaction is continuing or returning. A scratchy throat without breathing or swallowing changes may have another cause, yet it should be discussed with the treating team because symptoms can change quickly. Wheezing, hoarseness, a tight throat, lip or tongue swelling, dizziness, hives, vomiting or collapse are especially concerning. The suspected trigger may be a food, medicine, sting or another exposure.

Follow the emergency plan you were given and keep prescribed adrenaline available. If symptoms return, use the adrenaline device as instructed and call emergency services immediately; do not wait to see whether the throat settles. Sit or lie in the position advised by emergency responders, avoid food and drink if swallowing is difficult, and do not travel alone. Once safe, arrange follow-up to identify the trigger, review device technique and discuss prevention. Call emergency services now for throat tightness, trouble breathing or swallowing, hoarseness, wheezing, tongue swelling, faintness, widespread hives or repeated vomiting after anaphylaxis. Even if symptoms improve, urgent observation may be needed because the reaction can return. Do not assume isolated soreness is harmless if it is worsening or accompanied by voice change. Ask what likely triggered the reaction, how to recognise an early recurrence, when to use adrenaline, and how many devices to carry. Ask whether you need an allergy referral, written emergency plan, medical alert information and advice for avoiding the suspected trigger.
