Sore, stiff hands and fingers: what to know

Short answer
Sore, stiff hands and fingers may come from irritated joints, tendons, or surrounding tissues, so track the pattern and seek assessment when symptoms persist or limit use.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Track
- Affected fingers, swelling, clicking, and morning stiffness
- Protect
- Avoid forceful gripping while keeping gentle movement
What the pattern can mean
Pain at the finger joints with swelling or reduced grip can occur with Hand Osteoarthritis. Stiffness affecting several joints, especially with swelling on both sides, needs assessment for inflammatory arthritis such as Rheumatoid Arthritis. A palm cord that gradually pulls a finger toward the palm can occur with Dupuytren's Contracture. A finger that catches, clicks, or locks during movement may reflect Trigger Finger. Finger Stiffness can also follow an injury, repetitive hand work, or prolonged rest.
What you can do now
Keep the hand gently moving through a comfortable range rather than holding it completely still. Use warm water or a warm pack for stiffness; a cool pack may soothe swelling after activity. Reduce forceful gripping, heavy lifting, and repeated squeezing for a while, while continuing light tasks as tolerated. Note which fingers are affected, whether symptoms are worse after waking or use, and whether clicking, numbness, or visible swelling appears.
When to seek care
Arrange a clinical assessment if stiffness continues, keeps returning, or interferes with dressing, writing, work, or sleep. Seek urgent help after a significant injury if a finger looks deformed, cannot move, or becomes pale, blue, or numb. Sudden marked swelling, redness, warmth, or fever also warrants prompt medical attention.

Could the location and timing suggest a joint, tendon, or soft-tissue problem? Do I need an examination or imaging? Which movements should I temporarily change, and what exercises are suitable? What signs should prompt earlier review?
