What should you know about a sore lump under your chin?

The area under the chin contains lymph nodes and sits near the teeth, throat, skin, and salivary tissues. A sore lump may occur with a cold, throat infection, dental problem, skin irritation, blocked gland, or cyst. Tenderness often reflects local inflammation, while the clinician also checks movement, firmness, skin changes, and growth.

A lump in the neck or under the chin can be a presentation of head and neck cancer, lymphoma, thyroid cancer, or cancer of unknown primary. That possibility cannot be determined from soreness or location alone. Assessment may involve the mouth, throat, teeth, skin, salivary area, and thyroid, with imaging or sampling when needed.

Notice whether the lump changes while you have a sore throat, tooth pain, fever, bad taste, mouth ulcer, or skin irritation. Do not squeeze it or keep testing it with your fingers. Arrange a medical or dental review if it does not settle, becomes larger, feels firm or fixed, or comes back.

Take notes about when it began and any difficulty chewing, opening your mouth, swallowing, or speaking. If thyroid evaluation becomes relevant, ask the clinician to explain why and whether thyroid removal surgery has any place in the plan.

Seek urgent help for breathing or swallowing difficulty, rapidly worsening swelling, inability to open the mouth, or severe illness with facial or neck swelling. Arrange prompt review for a persistent, enlarging, hard, or immobile lump, especially with ongoing hoarseness, night sweats, or unexplained weight loss.

Ask whether the lump feels like a lymph node, cyst, salivary swelling, or another structure. Ask if your teeth, throat, mouth, skin, or thyroid need examination, whether imaging or sampling is needed, and what change should bring you back sooner.
