Solution for a flaky scalp

Dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis commonly produce loose white or yellowish scale, sometimes with redness or itch. Scalp psoriasis tends to create thicker plaques that may extend beyond the hairline. Scalp ringworm can cause scaling with broken hairs, tenderness, or areas of hair loss. Dryness and a reaction to hair products may also lead to visible flakes without an infection.

Use a gentle shampoo, rinse well, and avoid picking or scraping the scalp. A medicated shampoo treatment may help when dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis is involved; use it exactly as directed and allow contact time when instructed. Do not share combs, brushes, hats, or towels if ringworm is suspected. Hair loss, tender areas, or persistent scale needs assessment because an infection may require prescription treatment.

Arrange a medical review for bleeding, pus, marked redness, pain, swollen areas, patchy hair loss, or scale that persists despite appropriate shampoo use. Seek prompt care when a child develops a scaly patch with broken hairs or when several household members develop similar symptoms.
