Solid DCIS

Short answer
Solid DCIS is a pattern of ductal carcinoma in situ in which abnormal cells fill the inside of a breast milk duct without invading nearby tissue.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Where it starts
- Inside a breast milk duct
- What solid means
- The microscopic arrangement of DCIS cells
- Key test
- Breast biopsy
What the diagnosis describes
DCIS is confined to the lining of a milk duct. The word solid describes how the cells are arranged under the microscope; it does not by itself describe tumour size or severity. DCIS may be found on a mammogram before a lump or other symptom appears. A breast biopsy provides tissue for the pathologist to examine, and the report may also describe cell grade, hormone receptors, necrosis, and the area involved.
How care is planned
Your breast team will review the mammogram, examination, and biopsy findings together. Treatment commonly involves removing the area with a lumpectomy or removing more breast tissue with a mastectomy, depending on the extent and location. Radiotherapy may follow breast-conserving surgery. Hormone therapy for cancer may be discussed when the cells have hormone receptors. The choice depends on the pathology report, breast size, personal preferences, and whether clear margins can be achieved.
When to seek care
Arrange follow-up with the breast team so the biopsy result and treatment choices are reviewed without unnecessary delay. Seek urgent medical help for heavy bleeding, rapidly increasing breast swelling, severe pain, fever after a procedure, or trouble breathing. A new breast change should be assessed even when a previous scan was reassuring.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the biopsy confirms solid DCIS, what grade and hormone-receptor findings were reported, and whether the margins or imaging show a wider area. Ask why lumpectomy, mastectomy, radiotherapy, or hormone therapy is being recommended and what follow-up will involve.
Questions people ask
Is solid DCIS invasive breast cancer?
No. By definition, DCIS remains inside the duct and has not invaded nearby breast tissue, though treatment is used to reduce future risk.
Can solid DCIS be felt as a lump?
Sometimes, but it is often detected on a mammogram before a person notices a breast change.
