Soft-tissue expander: what to know

A surgeon places the expander beneath the skin, often after tissue has been removed or altered. The device has a port that allows the clinical team to add fluid during planned visits. Gradual filling lets the skin and nearby soft tissue adapt over time. Once the area is ready, a later procedure may replace the expander with an implant or complete another form of reconstruction. The exact sequence depends on the operation, tissue condition, and any additional cancer treatment.

Follow the wound-care and activity instructions from the surgical team. Attend filling appointments and report tightness that is severe, new pain, skin colour change, drainage, or a device that seems to move. Wear only recommended support garments and protect the incision from friction. Ask when showering, exercise, lifting, and sleeping positions are suitable. Keep a list of medicines and tell the team about fever or changes around the port.

Contact the surgical team promptly for increasing redness, warmth, swelling, drainage, wound separation, fever, or pain that is not controlled by the agreed plan. Sudden skin darkening, severe pressure, shortness of breath, or rapidly worsening swelling needs urgent assessment.
