What should you know about soft cyst on scalp?

Pilar cysts form from cells related to hair follicles and commonly appear as smooth, rounded lumps beneath the scalp skin. They may feel firm or soft, move slightly under the fingers, and remain painless unless irritated or inflamed. Other scalp lumps include inflamed cysts, abscesses, lipomas, and less common growths. Touch alone cannot reliably identify the cause, so a new or uncertain lump deserves a clinical look.

Do not squeeze, pierce, or repeatedly massage the lump; this can damage the skin and introduce infection. Keep the area clean and avoid friction from tight headwear or scratching. A clinician may monitor a quiet cyst, or discuss cyst removal if it is painful, repeatedly inflamed, catches on grooming tools, or bothers you. Removal is planned around the cyst wall because leaving part behind can allow it to return.

Arrange prompt care if the scalp becomes red, hot, swollen, increasingly tender, or starts draining. Fever, rapidly increasing size, spreading redness, severe headache, or feeling generally unwell warrants urgent assessment. Seek review for a lump that is hard, fixed, bleeding, ulcerated, or changing in shape. Do not assume that every scalp lump is a cyst.

Ask what features support a pilar cyst, whether examination alone is enough, and whether removal or observation makes more sense. Discuss expected wound care, hair trimming, possible scarring, signs of infection, and what to do if the lump becomes inflamed before an appointment.
