Short answer

A snoring control device may improve airflow during sleep, but the right choice depends on why snoring occurs and whether sleep apnoea is present.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How these devices work

Snoring happens when relaxed tissues in the nose, mouth, or throat vibrate as air passes through a narrowed passage. Nasal dilators can widen the front of the nose. A mandibular advancement device gently holds the lower jaw forward, creating more room behind the tongue. These options do not treat every cause, and an ill-fitting mouth device can cause jaw discomfort, tooth pressure, or excess saliva.

A blocked nose from Allergic Rhinitis or Chronic Sinusitis can make nasal breathing harder. Snoring can also occur with Obesity, while Obstructive Sleep Apnoea presents with repeated pauses in breathing, gasping, or marked daytime sleepiness. A device that makes sound quieter may not correct interrupted breathing.

Choosing and using one

Notice whether the noise is mainly from the nose or mouth, whether it changes with sleeping position, and whether someone has witnessed breathing pauses. Treat nasal blockage with advice from a clinician or pharmacist, and avoid using a mouth device if you have significant jaw pain or untreated dental problems without professional guidance. Side sleeping, avoiding alcohol near bedtime, and keeping a regular sleep schedule may also help. A clinician or dentist can check fit and discuss a sleep assessment before a custom device is made.

When to seek care

Arrange a medical review if snoring is persistent and disruptive, or if it comes with choking sounds, witnessed pauses, morning headaches, poor concentration, or daytime sleepiness. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty while awake, blue lips, chest pain, or confusion. Do not rely on a snoring device to manage suspected Obstructive Sleep Apnoea without assessment.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether your symptoms suggest a blocked nose, a jaw or throat issue, or sleep apnoea; which device suits your teeth and jaw; and whether you need a sleep test before using it.
