Smile Lines Around the Eyes: What to Know

Lines at the outer corners of the eyes are often called crow's feet. Smiling activates the small muscles around the eyes, creating temporary folds; repeated movement can leave lines visible when the face is relaxed. Thin eyelid skin also shows dehydration and environmental exposure readily. These lines are not the same as dark circles, puffiness or irritation, although several concerns can occur together.

Compare both sides in neutral light. A new crease with eyelid swelling, rash or irritation may reflect a skin or eye-area issue rather than ordinary expression lines.

Apply a gentle moisturiser around the orbital bone without getting products into the eyes, use sunglasses outdoors and protect the area from sun exposure. Do not scrub or stretch the delicate skin. If you have itching, scaling or persistent redness, pause irritating products and arrange an assessment.

For cosmetic concerns, a dermatology clinician can distinguish movement lines from volume or texture changes. Options may include carefully selected injectables or other procedures, but the eye area requires precise technique and a discussion of risks, alternatives and expected recovery.

Seek prompt medical care for eye pain, vision change, marked one-sided swelling, facial weakness, fever, discharge or a rapidly developing rash. For lines alone, book a routine appointment if they change quickly, follow persistent irritation, or cause enough distress that you are considering treatment.
