What a thread lift is designed to do
A thread lift uses absorbable sutures beneath the skin to create a modest, temporary lifting effect.
Threads are placed through small entry points and positioned to support selected areas of the face. They may be considered when laxity is mild and a person wants a less invasive option than surgery. The result depends on facial structure, skin quality and the amount of sagging; it cannot reproduce the tissue repositioning of a surgical facelift.
Does it hurt?
Local anaesthetic is commonly used to numb entry points and the planned thread path. You may feel pressure, pulling or brief discomfort while threads are positioned. Soreness, tightness and tenderness can occur afterward, particularly with chewing, smiling or sleeping on the treated side.
Is it safe?
Thread lifting is a medical procedure with risks that require careful patient selection and sterile technique. Suitable anatomy, realistic expectations and an experienced clinician matter. Infection, skin dimpling, unevenness, thread visibility or extrusion can occur, and the procedure may not be appropriate when there is active skin inflammation or insufficient tissue support.
How long do results last?
The initial lift changes as swelling settles, and the threads are gradually absorbed. The visible effect is temporary and differs between people because skin laxity, facial movement and ageing continue. A follow-up plan should focus on the result after healing rather than judging it in the first few days.
Key facts before deciding
Thread lifts are often discussed for early jowls, softening around the mouth, or a mild loss of definition along the lower face. They are not a cure for loose skin. A provider should explain the likely degree of lift in your own face and whether volume loss, skin texture or heavier laxity needs a different plan.
Who may be a candidate
A clinician may consider a thread lift for someone with mild to moderate facial laxity, reasonable skin quality and a clear understanding of its limits. Assessment includes the distribution of fat, skin thickness, healing history, current medicines and prior fillers or surgery. It may be deferred for active acne, infection, impaired healing or certain medical conditions.
What happens during treatment
After a facial assessment and consent discussion, the clinician marks vectors that fit your anatomy, cleanses the skin and numbs entry sites. Threads are placed beneath the skin and adjusted for support, then entry points are checked before you leave. You will receive instructions about face movement, sleeping position, cleansing and when to contact the clinic.
Recovery
Expect some swelling, bruising, tenderness and a sensation of tightness. Follow the clinician's instructions about vigorous exercise, dental work, wide mouth movements and pressure on the face. Seek prompt advice for worsening redness, heat, pus, fever, increasing pain, a thread becoming visible, or a sudden change in facial symmetry.
Risks and limitations
Possible complications include bruising, infection, dimpling, puckering, discomfort, asymmetry, thread migration, breakage or extrusion. A thread lift may also provide less lift than expected or lose its effect sooner than hoped. Discuss what corrective options are available if the contour does not settle as planned.
Alternatives to consider
Alternatives may include skincare for sun-damaged skin, injectable treatment for volume-related folds, energy-based tightening, or a facelift for more substantial laxity. The right option depends on whether the leading issue is skin texture, volume loss, muscle activity or loose tissue.
Choosing a provider
Choose a licensed clinician who routinely assesses facial anatomy and can describe their plan for complications. Ask which thread material they use, where entry points will be, what recovery restrictions apply and why this procedure is preferable to other options for your particular concern.
Questions people ask
Can a thread lift replace a facelift?
No. A thread lift offers a more modest, temporary effect and does not reposition tissue in the way surgery can.
Can threads treat deep nasolabial folds?
They may be considered within a broader assessment, but folds driven by volume loss or heavy laxity can need another approach.
What should I report after treatment?
Contact the clinic promptly for increasing pain, heat, pus, fever, a visible thread, marked asymmetry or worsening redness.
