Smelly, cloudy urine: what can it mean?

Cloudiness can come from concentrated urine, crystals, mucus, vaginal or genital discharge, or cells and bacteria in the urinary tract. Dehydration is more likely when you are thirsty, have a dry mouth, or have been sweating, vomiting, or drinking less. A Urinary Tract Infection may cause burning when passing urine, needing to go often, urgency, lower abdominal discomfort, or a strong odour.

A Kidney Infection can cause fever, chills, nausea, and pain in the side or back, sometimes with urinary symptoms. The appearance alone cannot distinguish these causes, so a clinician may need a urine sample.

Drink regularly if you are able to do so and do not have a medical fluid restriction. Avoid delaying urination, and note burning, frequency, pelvic pain, discharge, fever, or back pain. Do not start leftover antibiotics: the correct treatment depends on the cause and may require testing.

Arrange a GP review if the cloudiness or smell continues, returns repeatedly, or is joined by urinary discomfort. Tell the clinician about pregnancy, recent antibiotics, medicines, kidney problems, and any genital symptoms because these details affect assessment.

Seek prompt medical care for fever, chills, vomiting, pain in the side or back, blood in the urine, or feeling markedly unwell. Urgent advice is especially important during pregnancy, for a child, or for someone with a weakened immune system or known kidney disease. Confusion, fainting, or inability to keep fluids down needs emergency help.

Ask whether a urine test or culture is needed, whether the symptoms fit a bladder infection or kidney infection, and which fluid or pain measures are safe for you. Ask when to expect improvement and which changes should trigger reassessment.
