Smear test while on your period

Menstrual blood can cover cervical cells in the sample. Whether to continue depends on the amount of bleeding, the clinic's equipment, and its local instructions. A clinician may proceed during light bleeding or recommend rescheduling so the laboratory has a clearer sample.

Your period does not explain away symptoms such as bleeding after sex, bleeding between periods, unusual discharge, or pelvic pain. Mention these symptoms even if they started around menstruation, because they may need their own assessment.

Call the clinic before travelling if your period has started, particularly when bleeding is heavy. Ask whether to attend, move the appointment, or follow a specific preparation plan. Do not use a tampon immediately before the examination unless the clinic has told you it is acceptable; follow the advice you receive.

If the appointment is moved, arrange the replacement date before ending the call. Keep track of any result or follow-up message, and tell the clinician about pregnancy, medicines, recent procedures, or new symptoms.

Seek medical advice for bleeding that is unusual for you, lasts beyond your expected period, follows sex, or comes with pelvic pain or unusual discharge. Urgent help is appropriate for very heavy bleeding, severe pain, fainting, or marked weakness. Screening timing should not delay evaluation of concerning symptoms.

Ask whether your current bleeding is light enough for sampling, how soon the appointment can be moved, whether an HPV test can be taken at the same visit, and what to do if bleeding continues. Ask when to expect results after the sample is taken.
