What should you know about a small stye inside the eyelid?

An inner stye develops on the inner surface of the eyelid, so the swelling may rub against the eye with each blink. You may notice soreness, watering, a red eye, or a small pale point under the lid. The eyelid can feel heavy without a visible spot on the skin. Other causes of a painful or swollen eyelid include irritation and inflammation, so an examination may be needed when symptoms are unusual or persistent.

Apply a clean, comfortably warm compress to the closed eye for several minutes at a time, repeating it through the day. Wash your hands before and after touching the area. Do not turn the eyelid inside out repeatedly, scrape the swelling, or try to drain it yourself. Avoid contact lenses and eye makeup while the eyelid is sore. Replace eye cosmetics after recovery if they may have been contaminated.

Get prompt medical advice if pain or redness spreads beyond the eyelid, you develop fever, your vision becomes blurred, or moving the eye is painful. Urgent care is needed for severe pain, sudden vision loss, or swelling that closes the eye. Arrange a review if the lump persists, returns often, or does not respond to gentle care.
