What should you know about a small stye?

A stye can look like a small red spot or pimple at the eyelid edge. It may feel sore when blinking and can cause local swelling, watering, or a crust near the lashes. A stye is different from a deeper, usually less tender eyelid lump, so the exact appearance and location matter. Do not assume every red or swollen eye is a stye; irritation, allergy, or another infection can look similar.

Wash your hands, then hold a clean warm compress against the closed eyelid for several minutes and repeat through the day. Use warmth that feels comfortable, not hot enough to burn. Keep the eyelid clean, avoid squeezing or piercing the lump, and pause eye makeup and contact lenses until it has settled. Do not share towels, cosmetics, or eye products. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether treatment is needed if it persists.

Arrange prompt assessment for worsening swelling around the eye, fever, spreading redness, vision changes, pain with moving the eye, or marked light sensitivity. Seek urgent help for severe eye pain, sudden loss of vision, or swelling that makes it difficult to open the eye. A clinician should review a lump that does not improve, keeps returning, or affects sight.

Ask whether the lump is a stye or another eyelid problem, how long to continue warm compresses, and whether you should stop contact lenses or particular cosmetics. If it recurs, ask about eyelid hygiene and factors that may be contributing.
