What should you know about small spots on the penile head?

Tiny, evenly arranged, skin-coloured or pale bumps that have been present for a long time can be a normal variation. Redness, soreness, itching, swelling, discharge, ulcers, blisters, or a rough patch suggest irritation, inflammation, or infection and need assessment. Soap, friction, condoms, lubricants, and sexual contact can all be relevant clues. Acne is not a useful default explanation for spots on the glans.

Do not try to diagnose a sexually transmitted infection from appearance alone. A clinician can examine the area and arrange appropriate testing when exposure or symptoms make it relevant.

Rinse with water, dry gently, and stop fragranced soaps, antiseptics, and unprescribed creams on the area. Avoid squeezing or scraping the spots. If there is soreness or discharge, avoid sexual contact until you have been assessed; use condoms consistently afterward as advised. Tell the clinician when the spots began, whether they followed a new product or sexual contact, and whether a partner has symptoms.

Arrange prompt medical care for new spots with pain, ulcers, blisters, bleeding, discharge, burning urination, marked swelling, or a fever. Seek urgent help if you cannot pass urine, the foreskin is trapped behind the glans, or swelling is severe. Any sore, lump, or patch that persists or changes should be examined rather than treated at home.

Ask whether the pattern looks like normal anatomy, irritation, inflammation, or an infection; whether testing is needed; and which products or activities to avoid while the skin heals. Ask when it is safe to resume sex.
