What should you know about a small soft lump on the neck?

A lump that moves slightly beneath the skin may differ from one that feels deep or fixed. Lymph nodes can enlarge near an infection affecting the throat, ear, teeth, or skin. The front of the lower neck includes the thyroid and nearby tissues. Neck lumps can occur with head and neck cancer, lymphoma, thyroid cancer, or cancer of unknown primary, but the presence of a soft lump is not proof of any one condition.

Notice its position, approximate size, mobility, tenderness, and whether it changes after an infection settles. Avoid massaging, squeezing, or piercing it. Book an examination if it persists, grows, becomes firm, or cannot be explained. A clinician may examine your mouth, throat, ears, thyroid, and lymph-node areas before deciding whether imaging or sampling is needed.

Get urgent help if the swelling interferes with breathing or swallowing, or if you develop rapidly worsening pain, fever with severe illness, or spreading redness. Seek timely review for a persistent lump with hoarseness, unexplained weight loss, night sweats, or a lump that becomes hard, immobile, or rapidly larger.

Ask which neck structure seems involved, whether recent infection could account for the finding, how long to monitor it, and what change should trigger earlier review. Ask whether an ultrasound would clarify its depth or composition.
