Small red spots on the penile tip: what to know

The tip, or glans, is sensitive to soaps, lubricants, condoms, sweat, and friction. Irritation may cause diffuse redness or small spots with stinging. Inflammation can cause tenderness, itching, or a change in the surface texture. Infection may be accompanied by discharge, unpleasant odour, pain when urinating, blisters, or ulcers. A visual description alone cannot identify the cause, and a clinician may need to examine the area and ask about recent products and sexual contact.

Rinse with water only for now and dry carefully. Avoid antiseptics, deodorants, harsh soaps, and scrubbing. Do not place household remedies or leftover medication on the tip. Pause sex and masturbation if they increase soreness, and do not share towels. If a condom, lubricant, or cleanser preceded the change, stop that product and keep its name for the appointment. Testing may be recommended when exposure or discharge makes an infection possible.

Seek prompt care for discharge, painful urination, fever, rapidly increasing swelling, severe tenderness, blisters, ulcers, bleeding, or inability to retract or replace the foreskin normally. Arrange a review for spots that remain after gentle care, recur, or become scaly or crusted. Do not wait for symptoms to become severe after a new sexual exposure; sexual-health services can advise on examination and testing.
