Small red moles all over the body: what to know

Cherry angiomas are common benign growths made from small blood vessels near the skin surface. They may be bright red, purple-red, flat, or slightly raised, and can occur on the trunk, arms, or other areas. Some develop gradually and may bleed if scratched or rubbed. The label red mole is descriptive rather than a diagnosis: other vascular lesions, irritated growths, and pigmented skin cancers can resemble one another. A clinician looks at the whole pattern and checks any spot that stands out from the rest.

Map the spots with photographs and note any change in size, colour, texture, bleeding, or symptoms. Avoid picking them and protect areas that catch on clothing or jewellery. Harmless cherry angiomas do not always need treatment. If one is repeatedly irritated or you want it removed after assessment, pulsed dye laser treatment may target superficial blood vessels, while electrosurgery uses controlled heat. The choice depends on the lesion, location, skin type, and healing considerations; removal can leave temporary redness or a mark.

Book a skin examination for a spot that changes quickly, has an irregular shape or mixed colour, bleeds without clear trauma, forms a persistent crust, or becomes painful. Seek prompt care if many new lesions appear alongside fever, unusual bruising, or feeling unwell. Do not diagnose a changing mark from a photograph alone.
