Small red bumps on skin: possible causes and warning signs

A rash after a new product, fabric, or chemical can fit contact dermatitis. Heat and sweating can produce itchy clustered bumps. Scaly plaques may occur with psoriasis, while facial bumps with flushing can accompany rosacea. Cellulitis is different: it typically causes an area of expanding redness, warmth, swelling, and tenderness rather than a stable group of tiny bumps. Sun exposure can cause redness and sensitivity before peeling. These clues guide an examination but do not replace one.

Stop suspected irritants, rinse gently, and keep the skin cool. Use a fragrance-free moisturiser if the surface is dry or tight, and avoid scratching, scrubbing, and squeezing. Wear loose breathable clothing and protect exposed skin from more sun. Do not apply leftover antibiotics or steroid creams without advice, since the wrong product can worsen some rashes or hide important changes. Photograph the area and note when it started, what touched it, and whether it is spreading.

Get prompt assessment for rapidly expanding redness, warmth, swelling, increasing pain, pus, fever, or red streaks. Seek urgent help for facial or throat swelling, breathing difficulty, faintness, blistering over a large area, or a purple rash with severe illness. Arrange routine care for persistent, recurrent, scaly, bleeding, or unexplained bumps.
