What should you know about a small needle biopsy?

Short answer
A small needle biopsy uses a thin needle to collect cells or tissue for laboratory examination and treatment planning.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Purpose
- Collect cells or tissue for laboratory review
- Guidance
- Imaging may help place the needle
- Results
- May include pathology and additional cell tests
What the procedure does
A clinician cleans the skin and guides a thin needle into the area being assessed, sometimes using imaging for accurate placement. The sample may contain loose cells or a small core of tissue. A pathologist examines it for cell appearance, tissue structure, and features that help distinguish a benign change from cancer or another condition.
Some samples need additional laboratory tests. Immunohistochemistry can look for proteins in cells, while genomic tumour profiling may examine tumour changes that influence treatment choices. A needle sample may not answer every question, and another sample or test can sometimes be needed.
Before and after the biopsy
Tell the team about blood-thinning medicines, allergies, bleeding problems, pregnancy, and previous reactions to local anaesthetic. Follow instructions about eating, drinking, and medicines. Afterward, keep the site clean as advised and avoid strenuous activity if the team recommends a short recovery period.
Ask when results are expected, who will explain them, and whether the sample may be used for further testing. A biopsy result is interpreted with the examination and scans rather than in isolation.
When to seek care
Contact the care team for bleeding that does not settle with firm pressure, increasing redness or swelling, worsening pain, fever, or drainage from the site. Seek urgent help for sudden breathing difficulty, chest pain, fainting, or severe bleeding, depending on where the biopsy was performed.
Questions for your doctor
What type of needle biopsy is planned, and will imaging guide it? Should I change any medicine beforehand? How will discomfort and bleeding be managed? When will the pathology report be ready? Could immunohistochemistry or genomic tumour profiling be needed?
Questions people ask
Is a small needle biopsy the same as a scan?
No. A scan creates images of the area, while a biopsy collects material for laboratory examination. The two tests can provide complementary information.
Will every biopsy give a final answer?
Not always. The sample may be too small or may need extra testing, so the team may recommend another test to clarify the findings.
