Small lump on neck that hurts

A small painful neck lump often reflects local inflammation, yet persistent pain or swelling should be assessed by a clinician. Enlarged lymph nodes can hurt during infections involving the throat, ear, teeth, or skin. An inflamed cyst, salivary gland, or nearby tissue can also cause pain. The symptom pattern is useful, but it cannot name the cause or confirm cancer.

Consider whether pain occurs with movement, swallowing, or touch, and whether there is redness, warmth, drainage, fever, sore throat, ear discomfort, or dental trouble. A lump that settles as an infection improves may behave differently from one that persists, grows, or becomes firm and fixed.
