Small lump on neck that hurts when pressed

A small neck lump that hurts when pressed may reflect inflammation, irritation, or another cause that needs examination. Enlarged lymph nodes can be tender during infections of the throat, ear, teeth, or nearby skin. A sore cyst, inflamed gland, or muscle-related area may feel similar. Tenderness alone cannot distinguish these causes, and it does not establish a cancer diagnosis.

Describe whether pain occurs only with pressure or also at rest, and whether there is redness, warmth, drainage, fever, sore throat, ear pain, or dental pain. A tender lump may change as a nearby infection settles. If it remains, grows, becomes hard or fixed, or appears without an obvious inflammatory problem, a clinician should assess it. Head and Neck Cancer, Lymphoma, Thyroid Cancer, and Cancer of Unknown Primary are conditions a specialist may consider when the overall examination calls for further investigation; a painful lump is not proof of any one of them.

Do not squeeze, massage, or repeatedly test the lump. Keep a brief record of when you noticed it, its position, tenderness, and any infection symptoms. Arrange a medical appointment if the pain or swelling persists, worsens, or returns. The clinician may examine your mouth, throat, ears, teeth, skin, and neck, and may recommend imaging or sampling based on what is found.

Get urgent help for difficulty breathing or swallowing, rapidly spreading swelling, severe pain, marked redness, or feeling acutely unwell. Seek timely review for persistent fever, night sweating, unexplained weight change, voice change, or a lump that keeps enlarging. Those warning features call for assessment; they do not tell you the diagnosis in advance.

Ask whether the tenderness fits an infection or another local cause, which nearby structure is involved, and how long observation is reasonable. Ask what changes should bring you back sooner, whether an ultrasound or other test is needed, and whether Thyroid Removal Surgery is relevant only if a thyroid finding is identified.
