Small lump on the neck

Neck lumps may involve lymph nodes, the thyroid, skin, muscle, or other soft tissue. Lymph nodes can enlarge while the body responds to an infection in the throat, mouth, teeth, ears, or scalp. A cyst or inflamed skin structure may form a separate, rounded lump. Recent illness and tenderness can provide context, but they do not settle the diagnosis.

Some people with lymphoma or head and neck cancer present with a neck mass, and thyroid cancer can be assessed when a lump is near the thyroid. If no primary source is found during evaluation, clinicians may use the term cancer of unknown primary. A neck lump by itself does not tell you which condition is present.

Record the date you noticed the lump and whether it changes in size, texture, mobility, or tenderness. Note recent infections, dental work, skin problems, voice change, swallowing difficulty, or unexplained general symptoms. Do not squeeze it or repeatedly press on it. Arrange a clinical examination when it persists, enlarges, or has no clear explanation. Examination may be followed by ultrasound or other tests.

Seek emergency help for difficulty breathing or swallowing. Request prompt medical review for rapid enlargement, a hard or fixed lump, persistent hoarseness, ongoing fever, drenching night sweats, or unexplained weight loss. These features can have non-cancerous causes, but they should not be left unexplained.

Ask where the lump appears to arise, whether it resembles a lymph node or cyst, and whether imaging is needed. Ask how long to monitor it, what change matters most, and which symptoms should prompt an earlier appointment.
