Small Laser Diode: What to Know

A diode laser produces light in a specific wavelength range. In hair removal, pigment in the hair absorbs the light and converts it into heat, which can reduce the follicle’s ability to produce hair. A small handpiece may be useful for limited areas, but the device’s size does not by itself establish its power, safety, or suitability. Results depend on hair colour and thickness, skin tone, treatment area, settings, and the growth cycle.

First identify the intended use and confirm that the device is designed for that purpose. Ask who will operate it, how skin tone is assessed, whether a test spot is offered, and what eye protection is used. Avoid tanning and follow the provider’s instructions about shaving, active products, and sun exposure. Home or poorly supervised devices can cause burns, pigment changes, or eye injury when used incorrectly. Read the manufacturer’s instructions and do not improvise settings.

Stop treatment and seek medical advice for blistering, severe pain, marked swelling, spreading redness, significant colour change, or vision symptoms. A clinician should assess a persistent wound or a reaction that is worsening rather than settling. Get advice before treatment if the area has an active rash, infection, open wound, or a changing pigmented lesion.
