Small Keloid on an Ear Piercing: What to Know

Keloids form when scar tissue keeps building after skin injury. An ear piercing can trigger a firm, smooth or shiny lump on the front or back of the earlobe. It may itch, feel tender, or gradually extend past the original piercing site. A hypertrophic scar stays within the wound area, while an infection is more likely to cause warmth, increasing pain, pus, or spreading redness. A new skin lump is worth having examined rather than assumed to be a keloid.

Do not pierce, cut, squeeze, or repeatedly traumatise the area. Keep jewellery and hair from catching on the lump, and follow cleaning advice given for the piercing. A dermatologist may discuss intralesional steroid injection, pressure-based care, cryotherapy, laser treatment, or surgery depending on the lump’s size, firmness, symptoms, and history. Keloids can recur after treatment, so prevention and follow-up are part of the plan.

Book a dermatology review when the lump is enlarging, itchy, painful, or repeatedly irritated. Seek prompt care for pus, marked warmth, rapidly spreading redness, fever, or severe pain, because these features can indicate infection rather than scar growth. Sudden bleeding, ulceration, or a rapidly changing mass also needs timely examination.

Ask whether the lump is a keloid, a hypertrophic scar, an infected piercing, or another skin lump. Ask which treatment fits its position and whether combining treatments could reduce recurrence. Discuss jewellery removal, pressure options, expected skin changes, follow-up timing, and warning signs after treatment.
