What should you know about a small eye stye?

A stye, also called a hordeolum, is a small inflamed spot at the edge of the eyelid or just inside it. It may look like a red pimple, feel sore when you blink, and cause watering or a gritty sensation. Mild eyelid swelling can occur around the lump. An eye stye is different from a deeper, usually less tender blocked gland called a chalazion.

Do not squeeze or pierce the lump. Pressure can irritate the eyelid and spread inflammation. A small stye does not by itself explain changes in vision or severe pain inside the eye.

Wash your hands before touching your face. Hold a clean, comfortably warm flannel over the closed eye for several minutes, repeating this through the day. Wipe away loosened crusting with clean water, using a fresh part of the cloth each time. Avoid eye makeup and contact lenses until the eyelid feels settled, and do not share towels or cosmetics.

Seek prompt medical advice if swelling spreads around the eye, the eye becomes very painful, vision changes, light hurts, or you feel unwell.
