Small ear keloid: what to know

Keloids can develop after piercing, surgery, acne, or a minor injury. They are often firm, smooth, and raised, and may feel itchy, tender, or tight. Unlike an ordinary scar that stays within the original wound, a keloid can grow beyond it. A small bump may also be an earring reaction, infection, cyst, or another skin lump, so examination is useful when the diagnosis is unclear.

Avoid squeezing, repeatedly touching, or re-piercing through the area. Keep jewellery and hair products from rubbing it, and follow wound-care advice if the skin is open. Dermatology options may include steroid injection into the skin, cryotherapy, laser treatment, or keloid removal surgery. Treatment is often planned around the risk that scar tissue may return, so ask how options can be combined and what follow-up involves.

Arrange a review if the bump enlarges, becomes painful, bleeds, cracks, or interferes with sleep, headphones, or earrings. Seek prompt care for spreading redness, warmth, pus, fever, or rapidly increasing swelling. A new ear lump after piercing should be assessed if it does not settle with gentle care.
