What should you know about small cyst on skin?

An epidermoid cyst commonly contains keratin and may have a small central opening. It can occur on the face, neck, chest, back or other areas. Some cysts remain unchanged, while others become tender, swollen and red after inflammation or infection. A lump that looks like a cyst may instead be an abscess, an inflamed follicle or another type of skin lump, so appearance is not enough to identify it. A clinician may assess its depth, mobility, opening and surrounding skin before recommending care.

Do not squeeze, pierce or try to empty the cyst at home; this can push material deeper, damage the sac and introduce infection. Use gentle cleansing and reduce friction from clothing or straps. If it is inflamed, a clinician may discuss an Intralesional Steroid Injection or another approach. If infection has created a collection of pus, Abscess Drainage may be needed. Cyst Removal is the option commonly considered when the whole cyst and its wall need to be taken out, particularly when it repeatedly returns or causes problems.

Arrange a review if the lump enlarges, becomes painful, repeatedly drains, returns after settling, or interferes with movement or clothing. Seek prompt care for rapidly increasing swelling, spreading redness, marked warmth, pus with fever, or severe pain. A hard, fixed or steadily growing lump also needs examination rather than home treatment.

Ask whether the lump has features of an epidermoid cyst, whether it is inflamed or infected, and whether observation is reasonable. Ask what procedure would address the cyst wall, how the wound will be cared for, and what signs should trigger an earlier review.
