What should you know about small cherry red spots on skin?

A pimple often forms when a hair follicle becomes blocked by oil and dead skin, then may develop inflammation. Folliculitis is inflammation around a follicle and can look like several similar red bumps, sometimes after shaving, sweating or friction. Rosacea and perioral dermatitis can cause clusters around the central face or mouth. Razor bumps are linked to hairs growing back into the skin. Acne, including hormonal acne, may produce recurring spots in particular areas. A photo or brief description cannot reliably separate these possibilities, and a clinician may need to examine the pattern.

Wash gently, avoid scrubbing, and do not squeeze the spots. Pause new fragranced products if irritation began after a product change. Clean shaving tools, shave with the direction of hair growth, and reduce tight clothing or repeated rubbing if bumps cluster around follicles. Keep a note of triggers, itch, tenderness, discharge and how long each spot lasts. Depending on the pattern, a clinician may discuss care for Acne, Folliculitis, Rosacea or another diagnosis; LED Light Therapy is not appropriate for every red spot.

Book an assessment if spots persist, spread, recur frequently, scar, form deep painful lumps or do not respond to gentle skin care. Seek prompt medical help if redness is rapidly expanding, the skin is hot and very tender, pus is accompanied by fever, or swelling affects the eye or breathing. A spot that bleeds repeatedly or does not heal also deserves examination.

Ask what pattern the spots follow, whether follicles or the area around the mouth are involved, and which products or shaving habits could be contributing. Ask how long to try the recommended routine and which change would mean you should return sooner.
