What should you know about small cell melanoma?

The phrase small cell melanoma describes how melanoma cells look under a microscope; it does not describe a harmless small mole. A skin lesion may be uneven in colour, border, or shape, or may change, bleed, crust, itch, or form a new firm area. Only a biopsy examined by a specialist can establish the diagnosis.

After confirmation, clinicians assess the original lesion and whether melanoma cells have reached nearby lymph nodes or other areas. The outlook and treatment depend on the tumour's features and stage, so the word small alone does not determine seriousness.

Arrange prompt review with a dermatologist for a changing or suspicious lesion, and avoid picking or attempting to remove it yourself. Bring photographs showing earlier appearance and a list of medicines. Diagnosis may involve surgical excision, with further skin cancer surgery or tumour removal surgery depending on the findings.

A sentinel lymph node biopsy may be discussed for selected melanomas to check the first draining lymph node. If disease has spread, treatment may include immunotherapy. Follow-up after cancer treatment helps clinicians watch for recurrence and identify new skin changes.

Contact a dermatologist promptly for a lesion that changes quickly, bleeds without healing, develops a new lump, or shows a new dark or differently coloured area. Seek urgent care for severe headache, new weakness, confusion, seizures, or vision changes, particularly after a melanoma diagnosis. These symptoms can have many causes but need timely assessment.

Ask what the biopsy shows, what stage has been assigned, whether lymph-node assessment is suitable, and whether imaging is needed. Ask which treatment is proposed, how the scar will be managed, and how often follow-up should occur.
