Small bleeding after sex: what to know

Friction can cause a small surface tear, particularly when there is not enough lubrication. Vaginal dryness may occur around menopause or with some medicines. Infection, including Chlamydia, can inflame the cervix and cause bleeding after contact. Cervical dysplasia and cervical cancer can present with bleeding after sex; bleeding after sex is not proof that either condition is present. Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause can make vaginal tissue thinner and more easily irritated. Less commonly, a vaginal growth can bleed when touched.

Note when the bleeding happens, how long it lasts, and whether you have pain, unusual discharge, itching, or bleeding at other times. Pause penetrative sex if it causes fresh bleeding or discomfort, and use gentle lubrication when you resume. Arrange a clinician visit if it recurs, happens after menopause, or has no clear explanation. The assessment may include an examination, pregnancy testing when relevant, and tests for infection or cervical changes. A cone biopsy is one procedure that may be discussed when cervical tissue needs closer examination.

Seek urgent care for heavy or increasing bleeding, severe pelvic pain, faintness, weakness, fever, or a positive pregnancy test with pain or bleeding. Contact a clinician promptly if bleeding follows sex repeatedly, occurs after menopause, or comes with foul-smelling discharge or a sore in the vagina or cervix.
