Small ball-like lump in the neck

Lymph nodes can enlarge near an infection in the throat, teeth or skin. A lump low at the front of the neck may involve the thyroid, while a lump under the jaw can relate to salivary tissue. Texture, movement, tenderness, location and duration help a clinician narrow the possibilities.

Head and neck cancer, lymphoma and thyroid cancer can present with a neck mass, but a neck lump does not by itself diagnose cancer. Sometimes a mass is found before its original site is clear; this is assessed as cancer of unknown primary when appropriate.

Book a medical appointment if the lump persists, grows, feels firm or fixed, returns repeatedly, or has no clear connection with a recent infection. Note when it appeared, its exact position, tenderness, size change, voice changes, swallowing difficulty and any fever or night sweating.

Do not repeatedly squeeze or massage it. A clinician may examine the neck and mouth, check the thyroid and lymph nodes, and decide whether imaging or a sample is needed. Thyroid surgery is only one possible treatment and is not a conclusion from a lump alone.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing or swallowing, rapidly increasing swelling, severe pain, new weakness, coughing blood, or a voice change with breathing difficulty. These symptoms can reflect pressure on the airway or another condition needing prompt treatment.

Ask which features make the lump more likely to be a lymph node or thyroid-related, whether you need ultrasound or other testing, how long to monitor it, and what change should bring you back sooner.
