SLS is a foaming ingredient used in some toothpastes. Foam or residue can contact the skin around the lips during brushing and may worsen stinging, dryness, or sensitivity in some people. Perioral dermatitis typically appears as small bumps and irritated skin around the mouth, with possible extension toward the nose or eyes. Toothpaste exposure is only one possible contributor; skincare products, topical corticosteroids, and the skin barrier can also influence symptoms.

The rash may look like pimples, but acne products can be too irritating for this area. A clinician can examine the distribution and check whether another condition better explains it.

Continue brushing and choose a toothpaste that does not contain SLS if you and your dental professional feel a trial is reasonable. Rinse the skin around the mouth with lukewarm water, gently pat it dry, and avoid scrubbing or licking the area. Keep facial products, lip balms, and cosmetics to a minimum while the rash is active.

Change one product at a time so you can observe the pattern. If symptoms continue, a dermatologist may prescribe topical antibiotic therapy or oral treatment. Do not apply topical corticosteroids around the mouth unless a clinician specifically directs you, because they may worsen or mask the rash.

Make an appointment if bumps or irritation last despite a careful product change, spread toward the eyes, or keep recurring. Seek urgent care for eye pain, vision changes, marked facial swelling, breathing difficulty, widespread blistering, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Prompt assessment is especially useful when the rash is painful, crusted, or associated with fever.
