What should you know about slightly cloudy urine pregnancy?

Pregnancy can change vaginal discharge, and discharge may mix with urine in the toilet or sample container. Concentrated urine from not drinking enough can also look darker or less clear. Cloudiness with burning, frequent urination, lower abdominal pain, or an unusual smell may indicate a urinary tract infection. A kidney infection can cause fever, chills, side or back pain, nausea, or vomiting and needs urgent attention.

Cloudy urine is not a reliable way to diagnose infection. Contact your maternity or primary-care team if the change persists or urinary symptoms develop; they may request a properly collected urine sample and choose pregnancy-suitable treatment if needed.

Drink regularly unless your pregnancy clinician has advised fluid restriction. When collecting urine, wash your hands, use the supplied container, and follow clean-catch instructions so discharge is less likely to alter the sample. Do not take antibiotics, urinary remedies, or supplements for the symptom without checking that they are suitable in pregnancy.

Note the colour, smell, pain, temperature, urinary frequency, and any vaginal discharge. Share these details with your maternity team, especially if you have had urinary infections before or have a kidney condition.

Seek urgent maternity or medical advice for cloudy urine with fever, chills, flank or back pain, vomiting, blood in the urine, or feeling faint or very unwell. A suspected kidney infection during pregnancy should not be managed by waiting at home.

Contact your pregnancy care team promptly for burning, urgency, frequent urination, lower abdominal pain, or persistent cloudiness. Early testing can guide treatment and reduce the chance of symptoms progressing.
