What should you know about slightly cloudy pee?

Urine may look cloudy when it is concentrated, when minerals or mucus are present, or after some foods and medicines. A urinary tract infection can cause cloudiness with burning, urgency, frequent trips to the toilet, lower abdominal discomfort, or a stronger smell. Kidney infection is more concerning and may bring fever, chills, pain in the side or back, nausea, or vomiting.

Drink fluids regularly unless you have been told to restrict them, and observe the next few urine changes. Do not use leftover antibiotics or someone else’s medicine. If cloudiness lasts, returns often, or occurs with urinary discomfort, arrange a review and provide a clean urine sample if requested.

Write down fever, pain location, urinary frequency, smell, blood, and any recent medicines. These details help decide whether testing or treatment is needed. People who are pregnant, older, immunocompromised, or living with kidney problems should seek advice promptly when urinary symptoms appear.

Seek urgent care for cloudy urine with fever, chills, flank or back pain, vomiting, confusion, or feeling suddenly very weak, because these can occur with a kidney infection. Get prompt advice for visible blood, severe pain, or inability to pass urine.
