Short answer

Snoring happens when air makes relaxed tissues in the nose, mouth, or throat vibrate during sleep; persistent loud snoring or breathing pauses deserves medical assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

What causes the sound
Vibration of soft airway tissues as air passes during sleep.
Important pattern
Breathing pauses, gasping, or daytime sleepiness need assessment.
Helpful observation
Note sleep position, congestion, alcohol use, and witnessed breathing changes.

Why the sound happens

The airway naturally becomes narrower when muscles relax during sleep. Air moving through a narrowed space can make soft tissues vibrate, creating the familiar sound. A blocked nose from allergies or sinus problems, sleeping on the back, alcohol close to bedtime, and extra tissue around the neck can all make this narrowing more noticeable.

Snoring can be occasional and harmless, but it can also occur with obstructive sleep apnoea. People with that condition may have repeated partial or complete airway blockage during sleep, often with gasping, choking, restless sleep, or marked daytime sleepiness.

Useful first steps

Notice patterns for a week or two: whether snoring is worse on your back, after alcohol, during a cold, or when nasal congestion flares. Side sleeping may reduce airway narrowing for some people. Keeping a regular sleep routine and avoiding alcohol or sedating medicines near bedtime unless prescribed can also help.

If congestion is contributing, discuss safe ways to manage it with a clinician or pharmacist. If weight is affecting breathing during sleep, gradual, supported weight management may be part of a wider plan. Do not stop prescribed medication because of snoring without medical advice.

When to arrange medical care

Arrange a medical appointment if someone observes pauses in your breathing, gasping or choking in sleep, or if snoring is accompanied by unrefreshing sleep, morning headaches, difficulty concentrating, or sleepiness that affects driving or work. A clinician may ask about your sleep, examine your nose and throat, and decide whether a sleep assessment is appropriate.

Seek urgent help if severe sleepiness makes it unsafe to drive or operate machinery. Children who snore regularly, breathe through their mouth during sleep, or seem to struggle to breathe at night should also be assessed.

Questions to bring to an appointment

Ask whether your symptoms suggest a narrowed nasal passage, obstructive sleep apnoea, or another sleep issue; whether a sleep study would help; and which changes are suitable alongside your current medicines. If possible, bring observations from a bed partner about breathing pauses, gasping, sleep position, and daytime tiredness.

Questions people ask

Can a blocked nose make snoring worse?

Yes. Nasal congestion can increase resistance to airflow and encourage mouth breathing, which may make throat vibration louder. Allergies and ongoing sinus symptoms are worth discussing if congestion keeps returning.

Should I be worried if I hear someone stop breathing while asleep?

Breathing pauses, followed by snorting, gasping, or choking, should be discussed with a clinician because they can occur with obstructive sleep apnoea. Record what you observe and whether there is daytime sleepiness.

Can side sleeping help?

For some people, side sleeping reduces the tendency for the tongue and soft throat tissues to narrow the airway. It may be useful to try while arranging assessment if other concerning symptoms are present.
