What should you know about sleep lines on face?

Short answer
Sleep lines are temporary or persistent facial creases caused by repeated pressure, folding, and reduced skin flexibility during sleep.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common trigger
- Repeated pillow pressure and skin folding
- Daily support
- Moisturiser, gentle care, and sun protection
- Before procedures
- Have changing or unusual marks assessed first
Why these lines appear
Pressure from a pillow can fold the skin in the same direction night after night. Younger, well-hydrated skin may smooth after waking, while lines can linger as skin loses elasticity or when sun exposure, smoking, dryness, and repeated facial movement add to the underlying crease. Lines around the outer eyes may overlap with crow’s feet, and broader texture changes can be part of photoaging. A sleep line is usually a cosmetic texture concern, not a diagnosis of illness.
Ways to soften the appearance
Use a gentle cleanser and moisturiser, avoid scrubbing, and apply broad-spectrum sunscreen to exposed skin each day. Adequate hydration and a comfortable sleep position may reduce morning creasing, although changing position is not essential or realistic for everyone. If lines remain bothersome, a qualified clinician can discuss options. Botox can reduce movement that deepens selected expression lines, while dermal fillers may restore support in carefully chosen areas; each has different benefits, limitations, and risks. Treatment should be matched to the anatomy rather than the label of the line.
When a facial mark needs review
Seek medical advice if a line is actually a new lump, ulcer, scab, persistent one-sided swelling, or a pigmented mark that changes in size, shape, or colour. Prompt review is also appropriate for pain, bleeding, crusting, numbness, weakness, or a rash that does not settle. Cosmetic treatment should wait until an unexplained or changing lesion has been assessed.
Questions to discuss
Ask whether the crease is mainly pressure-related, expression-related, or linked with sun damage; which skin-care ingredients suit you; and whether Botox, fillers, or another approach fits the area. Ask about expected duration, possible swelling or bruising, and who will manage complications.

Questions people ask
Do sleep lines always become permanent?
No. Some smooth after waking, while repeated pressure and reduced skin elasticity can make others linger.
Can fillers treat every sleep line?
No. Fillers restore volume in selected areas and are not suitable for every crease. An examination is needed before choosing treatment.
