Sleep Apnea and Heart Failure

In obstructive sleep apnea, the throat narrows during sleep and breathing stops briefly before restarting with a gasp or snore. These repeated changes can activate stress responses and affect heart rate and blood pressure. Heart failure may cause breathlessness, tiredness, cough, or fluid-related ankle swelling. Heart failure presents with these symptoms in some people, but a symptom alone cannot identify its cause.

Palpitations can point to a rhythm problem such as atrial fibrillation and deserve mention during review. Sleep apnea may be one part of a wider cardiovascular picture, alongside hypertension and other conditions.

Arrange a review if you snore loudly, have witnessed pauses, wake choking, or feel unusually sleepy. Also report a change in walking distance, new swelling, cough, or needing more pillows to breathe comfortably. A clinician can examine you, review medicines, check blood pressure and rhythm, and decide whether sleep testing or heart tests are appropriate.

Continue prescribed heart-failure treatment and follow your care plan. Keep a short symptom diary, including sleep quality, breathlessness, swelling, and palpitations. If a sleep device is prescribed, mention discomfort or difficulty using it rather than abandoning treatment.

Get emergency help for severe or sudden breathlessness, chest pressure, fainting, blue lips, new confusion, or a fast irregular heartbeat with severe weakness. Contact your care team promptly for rapidly increasing swelling, a sudden change in breathing when lying down, or repeated night-time gasping.
