What should you know about skunks rabies?

Rabies is a serious infection affecting the nervous system. An animal may transmit the virus through saliva, most often during a bite, but a scratch contaminated with saliva can also matter. Touching a skunk, its fur, or intact skin is not the same as an exposure. Unusual animal behaviour, such as unprovoked aggression, weakness, or disorientation, increases concern, but an apparently calm animal cannot safely rule out infection. Symptoms in a person may appear only after an interval, so waiting to see whether you feel ill is unsafe.

Wash a bite or scratch immediately with plenty of soap and running water for a prolonged wash, then use an antiseptic if available. Do not seal the wound or try to catch the animal. Record when and where the contact occurred, what happened, and whether saliva reached broken skin or the face. Contact emergency or public-health services immediately for an exposure assessment. A clinician may recommend Rabies Post-Exposure Prophylaxis, which can include wound care, vaccine, and other treatment according to the exposure and your previous vaccination history. Rabies Vaccination can also be discussed for people whose work or activities create repeated animal exposure.

Seek urgent care now after any skunk bite, scratch, or saliva contact with an eye, mouth, or broken skin. Go promptly even if the wound looks small, bleeding has stopped, or the animal ran away. Emergency symptoms such as confusion, trouble swallowing, agitation, weakness, or unusual sensitivity to air or water require immediate emergency care; do not wait for an appointment.
