Rabies Post-Exposure Prophylaxis

Rabies post-exposure prophylaxis is urgent care after a possible exposure, combining wound care, vaccination, and sometimes antibodies.

It is used after bites, scratches, or saliva contact involving an animal that may carry rabies. The clinician assesses the exposure and previous rabies vaccination before choosing the appropriate plan.

This treatment is not intended to make you feel different straight away; it works by helping your immune system respond before rabies illness develops. Wound washing begins immediately, while vaccine protection builds after each dose.

Do not wait for symptoms to start. Symptoms after a possible exposure need urgent medical assessment, because treatment decisions are based on the exposure itself.

Injection-site soreness, redness, swelling, headache, tiredness, nausea, or muscle aches can occur. These effects are commonly short-lived, but tell the clinical team about severe allergy symptoms, worsening illness, or a reaction that concerns you.

Antibody treatment, when indicated, may cause local discomfort because it is placed around the wound where possible.

The course involves an initial urgent visit followed by scheduled vaccine visits. The exact timetable depends on local guidance, the nature of the exposure, and whether you received rabies vaccine in the past.

Complete every arranged dose unless the treating team changes the plan. Contact the clinic promptly if you cannot attend a scheduled visit.

Wash a bite or scratch with soap and running water as soon as possible, then seek urgent medical assessment. Do not try to capture or handle the animal.

Anyone with a bite, scratch, or relevant saliva exposure from a potentially rabid animal should be assessed urgently. A clinician considers the animal, location, wound, and prior vaccination rather than relying on how the injury looks.

The team examines and cleans the wound, documents the exposure, and checks your vaccine history. Vaccine is given by injection. For some exposures in people without prior vaccination, rabies antibodies are given around the wound and at another injection site.

Keep the wound clean and follow the clinician's dressing and antibiotic advice if given. Return for increasing redness, warmth, pus, fever, numbness, reduced movement, or bleeding that does not stop with pressure.

Delaying assessment can leave an exposure unmanaged. Tell the team about pregnancy, immune-suppressing medicines, severe allergies, and any previous rabies vaccination so they can tailor care safely.

There is no home substitute for a professional exposure assessment. People vaccinated before exposure may follow a different post-exposure vaccine plan, but still need wound care and urgent clinical advice.
